Someone moves from Tulsa to a city five times the size and tells everyone back home the dating pool finally makes sense now, more people, more options, better odds. Eighteen months later that same person is back on the apps complaining about the exact same thing they complained about here, except now with worse traffic and a longer commute to a first date that probably will not go anywhere.
We hear a version of this constantly. It is worth actually explaining why, because the math behind it is not intuitive, and once you see it, the idea that Tulsa is somehow a worse place to date because it is smaller stops making sense.
This is not a defensive, hometown-pride argument. It is a math and psychology argument, and it holds up whether or not you have any particular loyalty to Oklahoma. The mistake is treating population size as the only variable that matters, when the research on how people actually make choices says something closer to the opposite.
It also is not a claim that Tulsa is objectively better than every larger city for every possible reason. It is a much narrower, more specific claim about one thing: what actually produces good dating outcomes, and the research on that question does not point where most people assume it does.
The myth: more people means better odds
The logic seems airtight on the surface. A metro of seven million people has more single people in it than a metro of one million, so the odds of finding a match should be better. That logic assumes every one of those extra people is a real, actionable option, and that assumption falls apart the moment you actually try to date inside a huge pool of strangers.
A bigger pool is not the same thing as a better pool. It is just more noise, and noise does not improve your odds, it buries the signal you are actually looking for underneath a much bigger pile of profiles that were never going to go anywhere in the first place.
What happens when there are too many options
This is not just a dating theory. It has been directly tested. In a well known 2000 study, researchers Sheena Iyengar and Mark Lepper set up a jam-tasting table at an upscale grocery store and alternated between two versions: one offering 24 different jams, the other offering just 6 [1]. The large display drew more browsers, 60 percent of shoppers who passed stopped to look, compared to 40 percent at the smaller display. But when it came time to actually buy, the numbers flipped hard. Only 3 percent of people who stopped at the 24-jam table bought anything. At the 6-jam table, 30 percent did. The smaller selection sold roughly ten times more jam per person who stopped to look.
More options did not produce more decisions. It produced more browsing and almost no commitment, because the sheer volume of choice made picking one option feel like giving up all the others, a psychological cost that grows heavier the more options are sitting in front of you.
The shoppers at the 24-jam table were not less interested in buying jam. They were more overwhelmed by the act of choosing between 24 similar options, and that overwhelm itself became a reason to walk away without deciding at all. Notice how closely that maps onto a familiar dating-app experience, a long session of scrolling that ends with nobody messaged, not because none of the profiles were interesting, but because evaluating all of them got exhausting before a decision ever got made.
The same thing happens on dating apps
This is not just a jam problem. Researchers Toon Pronk and Jaap Denissen ran three separate studies specifically on choice overload in online dating and found the exact same pattern showing up in real romantic decision-making. Across their studies, participants became progressively more likely to reject potential partners the more profiles they browsed, with acceptance likelihood dropping by roughly 27 percent from the first profile evaluated to the last [2]. The partners were not actually getting worse as people scrolled. The researchers found the effect was driven by declining satisfaction with the process itself, not by the quality of who showed up later in the feed.
That finding matters more than it might seem at first. It means the problem was never really about which specific people were available on a given app on a given day. It was the browsing itself wearing people down until almost everyone started looking less appealing than they actually were. A bigger city functions like a longer, never-ending version of that same scroll, an effectively endless supply of new profiles to get worn down by before any one of them gets a real chance.
This connects directly to something we have written about before: 78 percent of active dating app users report real burnout from the process [4]. Choice overload research gives that burnout a mechanism instead of just a feeling. It is not that people using apps in big cities are pickier or more difficult. It is that an unlimited supply of options is quietly training everyone to reject faster and commit more reluctantly, in a city of any size, but especially in the ones where the supply of new profiles never runs out.
A bigger dating pool does not raise your odds. It raises the number of people you will reject before you get tired enough to stop looking.
Put those two findings together and a huge city's dating pool starts to look a lot like that 24-jam table. More browsing, more scrolling, more rejecting, and a shrinking chance that any single interaction turns into something real, precisely because there is always another option one swipe away making commitment feel premature.
What a smaller city actually gets you
Tulsa's dating pool is smaller in raw numbers, and that is exactly what makes it work differently. You are far more likely to already share a mutual friend, a former coworker, a gym, a neighborhood, with someone you meet here than you would be in a metro of seven million strangers. That overlap matters more than people give it credit for. A match with even one degree of separation carries built-in accountability that a total stranger from an app never does.
It also means the noise problem the jam study describes is structurally smaller here. There simply are not enough strangers in Tulsa to disappear into an endless scroll the way you can in a huge metro, which forces a kind of decision-making the jam study's smaller display produced by design. Fewer options, evaluated more seriously, tend to produce more actual commitment than an overwhelming number of options evaluated carelessly.
None of this requires nostalgia for small-town life or a rejection of anything a bigger city offers. It is a direct, testable claim: past a certain point, adding more strangers to a dating pool does not add real options, it adds friction, and friction is what the jam study and the dating-app research both measured directly.
Neighborhoods here do real work too. The Tulsa Arts District, Cherry Street, Brookside, and Blue Dome are all small enough that showing up regularly means recognizing faces, which turns a first date location into something closer to a shared context instead of a randomly assigned meeting point neither of you has any history with.
The accountability a small city adds for free
There is a second effect a smaller city produces that a jam study cannot fully capture: reputation. In a metro of seven million, ghosting someone or treating a date carelessly carries close to zero social cost, because the odds of ever crossing paths with that person again, or with anyone who knows them, are close to nothing. In Tulsa, that math changes. Dating pools this size tend to overlap through mutual friends, shared workplaces, and the same handful of neighborhoods, and that overlap creates a mild but real social accountability that a huge, anonymous pool simply does not have.
That is not a small thing. A dating pool where bad behavior carries some real social cost, even a small one, tends to produce better behavior across the board, which is a genuinely underrated advantage of dating somewhere smaller rather than somewhere so large that consequences disappear into the crowd.
None of this is an argument that everyone in a small city behaves better out of pure virtue. It is a much simpler mechanism than that: consequences shape behavior, and a pool small enough for consequences to actually exist tends to produce more careful, more genuine effort than a pool where a bad date simply disappears into millions of other strangers.
The dating pool math nobody does
Here is the reframe that actually matters. What determines your real odds is not the total size of a city's population. It is the number of people in that pool who are genuinely compatible with you and genuinely available, divided by how much noise you have to wade through to find them. A metro of seven million might have more compatible people in absolute terms, but it also has vastly more noise per compatible person, since the ratio of real matches to total profiles does not meaningfully improve just because the city got bigger.
A smaller city with a real filtering mechanism in front of it, instead of a raw, unfiltered pool of strangers, can produce a better effective dating pool than a huge city with no filtering at all. This is the entire logic behind pre-matching before anyone meets in person: it does synthetically, on purpose, what a smaller city already does by accident, cutting the noise down to something a person can actually evaluate seriously instead of scrolling past.
